A good product description is the basis for a correct CN code.

1 · De input: uw product-omschrijving1 · The input: your product description

  • Materiaal is vaak beslissend.

Enter the description in the top text field. The engine reads both Dutch and English and can process URLs from webshops (the slug is extracted automatically).

What makes a good description?

  • Material is often decisive. "sweater" is too vague — "woollen sweater", "cotton sweater" and "polyester sweater" land on different subheadings.
  • Function / kind — for clothing: mens', ladies', children's or baby wear. For food: raw vs. processed. For machines: electric vs. manual.
  • Composite product — for sets or multi-material items ("plastic chair with steel legs"), the engine applies GRI 3(b) "essential character" and prompts for reasoning.
  • Numbers — cylinder capacity, power, weight, dimensions — the engine recognises quantities and uses them for classification.

Steering words: below the text field, chips appear with words the engine considers meaningful. Click a chip to exclude it. Double-click a word in the description to mark it as essential (⭐).

2 · Bladeren via CLASS-categorie2 · Browse by CLASS category

Below the text input you find a Browse by CLASS category dropdown. This lets you navigate the EU product category tree (chapter → heading → subheading → CN8). Ideal when you already know the direction.

Example: Clothing and textilesKnitted or crochetedJerseys and pullovers (6110) → material choice.

3 · Onder de motorkap: de GRI-regels3 · Under the hood: the GRI rules

De engine past de WCO General Rules of Interpretation (GRI) toe in volgorde:

The engine applies the WCO General Rules of Interpretation (GRI) in order:

  1. GRI 1 · Heading + notes — Find the heading based on nomenclature text and Section/Chapter Notes. Exclusions are read explicitly.
  2. GRI 2(a) · Incomplete / unassembled goods — If an unfinished or disassembled product has the "essential character" of the finished article, it counts as the finished article.
  3. GRI 2(b) · Mixtures and composites — References to a material include mixtures with that material. If multiple headings result, GRI 3 decides.
  4. GRI 3(a) · Specificity — The most specific heading takes precedence.
  5. GRI 3(b) · Essential character — For composites or retail sets, classify by the component that determines "essential character". CLASS explicitly asks for reasoning.
  6. GRI 3(c) · Highest heading — In case of equally specific headings: pick the highest-numbered.
  7. GRI 4 · Most akin — If no heading fits: pick the most akin.
  8. GRI 5 · Packaging — Packaging usually follows the product.
  9. GRI 6 · Subheading refinement — The same rules apply at subheading level.

Under Decision tree in the outcome you see which GRI rules the engine applied and why.

Switch between NL and EN via the buttons at the top right. The classification itself is identical — only labels and explanations change. The engine understands both languages; you can type in Dutch and read the outcome in English (or vice versa).
